Comment on wifi in openSUSE 11.4!

A chat log from #suse showing a typical situation.

Please add the "Step 2" tutorial to any forums helping people with wifi on openSUSE 11.4 with KDE. This chatlog proves, that the NM-frontends have a lot to how the entire Networkmanager works, EVEN HOW IFUP IWCONFIG WORKS!!

Now see yourself what happened and make conclusions:

Who is who:

<nikola__> - troubled user. Wifi card does not work
<rhorse> (and other users) - trying to help by doing the normal things that experienced users would suggest.
<woodefec> - it's me.

<rhorse> OK, this might well work
<gandhijee> Chrysantine: still complains that it can't open /etc/samba/secrets.tdb file
<rhorse> make a directory called Removed in /etc/init.d. Move the file, network, into it. Then reboot. It should reboot without the network started. Then try the iwconfig/dhclient process.
* netsjanek__ opuścił/a czat (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
<rhorse> Then, to get it back just move network from Removed to its orig. place
<Chrysantine> gandhijee: Try #2.
<gandhijee> #2????

<Chrysantine> gandhijee: Good stuff, apparmor can be a bit tricky at times :p
<gandhijee> Chrysantine: honestly i didn't think about restarting it after i made the changes, just didn't really occur to me
<tigerfoot> Chrysantine: chkconfig boot.apparmor off :-)
<gandhijee> where can i find more info about apparmor and what it does?
<Chrysantine> tigerfoot: That's not really a good idea :-)
<tigerfoot> Chrysantine: oh really, works great ...

<nikola__> rhorse: I've moved it. So after reboot: 1) iwconfig wlan0 essid your_essid mode managed 2) dhclient -v wlan0. If that doesn't work. Put network file in /etc/init.d and reboot?

<rhorse> drats!
<woodefec> nikola__, maybe worth trying to use the gnome nm-applet

<nikola__> [stupid question] I'm using kde enviorment, can I install gnome nm-applet  and try with it?
* tackat opuścił/a czat (Read error: Operation timed out)
<woodefec> nikola__, yes, you can, http://susestarter.blogspot.com/
<woodefec> nikola__, check "Step 2"
<woodefec> i do not guarantee it would help. But it helped me to run mobile broadband and easily connect to any wifi
<nikola__> Well, I don't  have anything to lose :)
<woodefec> nikola__, you can always install Networkmanager-kde4-libs back
<woodefec> and delete the entry from Autostart

* freespacer (~freespace@dslb-188-109-231-102.pools.arcor-ip.net) wchodzi do pokoju #suse

<woodefec> if it wouldn't help
<woodefec> I am curious myself if it would help you, there is funny stuff going on with KNM/pnm

<woodefec> the problem is, nm-applet from gnome didn't work when I had the Networkmanager-kde4-libs installed. Plus I needed to install qtcurve-gtk and change the Gtk theme in KDE to QtCurve
<woodefec> than a small edit in Autostart and nm-applet worked. You've got all in the above mentioned blog. If it helps you, please tell me

<woodefec> WTF???????
<woodefec> nikola__, kidding me?

<rhorse> !!
<nikola__> nope
<SUSEhelp> My baby shot me down.
<nikola__> it's working
<nikola__> :D
<rhorse> how?
<nikola__> idk :D
<woodefec> http://susestarter.blogspot.com/ Step 2
<nikola__> yes
<rhorse> hmm
<nikola__> I just select my network from gnome-thing
<nikola__> and it connects right away
<nikola__> and is working fine

I hope this will be helpful. It's a shame KDE users can't connect to mobile broadband OR EVEN WIFI because of crapy Networkmanager-kde4-libs.
To be sure it isn't  Networkmanager-kde4-libs's fault, DEINSTALL IT AND INSTALL Networkmanager-GNOME, following THIS TUTORIAL.
